Background

Matthew is a full-time private tutor and has established tutoring posts with many high-profile clients in and around London. Graduating from Pembroke College, Cambridge in June 2013 with a BA (Hons) and MSci in Natural Sciences, Matthew covered a mixture of mathematics, physics, chemistry and materials science in the first two years of his degree, then went on to specialise in Experimental and Theoretical Physics in the final two.

A prestigious geophysics internship at BP’s North Sea Headquarters followed, and fundraising with the Pembroke Development Office as part of the Pembroke College Telephone Campaign.

A current inquisitive interest in algorithmic trading has employed tools learnt from mathematics and physics at university and A Level – an experience which Matthew uses to inspire his students and demonstrate how the skills they are learning come into their own when applied to the world of finance, and are transferable and relevant beyond academia.

A love of travel has taken Matthew to Australia, Southeast Asia, India, China and the Americas, and a talent for sport has seen him play badminton for his college at university and achieve a black belt in kickboxing.

Teaching Experience & Approach

Matthew has acted as a tutor and educational consultant for 16 premier London agencies. Invited to deliver Oxbridge Applications workshops to several of the top schools in Hong Kong including La Salle, German-Swiss International School and Harrow International, he is currently the Oxbridge mock-interviewer for STEM subjects at Epsom College and has formerly run PAT/MAT workshops at UCS.

Matthew’s tutoring offers a range of approaches. He can act as a resource to help students through homework assignments and explain difficult material in textbooks. He can also take the place of a teacher, delivering lessons in parallel to the school curriculum but tailored to target the student’s interests, or he can act as a mentor to help the student manage their own learning and maximise their potential. A balanced mix of all three at the start and an evolving approach to exactly meet the needs of each student is a time-tested blueprint.

For university admissions Matthew’s services range from personal statement and interview advice to a bespoke course guiding the student through the UCAS application to the final stages of interview preparation. It is advisable to start early to ensure a competitive application, giving students time to complete all recommended extracurricular readings and activities.

Having already taught regularly over Skype/Zoom for international clients in China, Hong Kong, Korea and Russia, Matthew has easily adapted his tuition practices to meet government lockdown regulations. Employing a dual webcam display which seamlessly transitions between handwriting and profile enables clear and effective delivery of lessons, in addition to use of the collaborative online whiteboard (BitPaper) – particularly useful for teaching younger students where it is essential for both student and tutor to monitor every stage of each other’s working.

Why Tutoring?

I developed and nurtured an interest in education during my time at university. Placed as an assistant physics teacher in my third year, through Cavendish Laboratory Educational Outreach, I taught science, mathematics and English as a foreign language at schools in India and China during my summer vacations.

I am passionate about helping children secure a solid education and lay the foundations for a successful career. My Cambridge education having opened up a wealth of opportunities for me, I want to help children achieve great things by receiving the best educational grounding.

testimonials

“Matthew is a really good tutor. He helps my daughter with her Chemistry. He is very enthusiastic and professional. We are happy with him so far. I would have no hesitation in recommending him to

“Matt tutored my son in A level Maths, Physics and Chemistry. He was consistently excellent. He was able to quickly identify areas that needed working on, and then efficiently addressed them. He has a good understanding of the exam requirements/techniques and structures the lessons accordingly. He was punctual, well prepared and my son got on well with him.”

“Matthew helped my son with some Maths A level topics and he has really benefited from this one to one tuition – it has been so useful to have these sessions. My son feels more confident with Maths and we would be very happy to use him again if needed. Matthew is very reliable and efficient, and always responds promptly to any emails regarding booking sessions. He is a kind and helpful tutor and a pleasure to deal with.”

“Matthew coached my son over the past year for gcse physics and chemistry. He was very reliable, knew the syllabus well and developed a good rapport with my son who was not the most conscientious pupil and struggles to focus at times. My son and I are delighted that he attained an A grade for both physics and chemistry thanks to Matthews assistance. I would highly recommend Matthew for gcse physics, chemistry and maths.”

“Mathew tutored our 10yr old boy for 1 hour a week during 2017. The principle areas of focus were-maths, keystone learning familiarisation, comprehension and some science. Firstly Mathew was prompt, friendly and Jamie found him easy to understand and helpful in explaining the various subjects. Jamie enjoyed the hour, maintained his concentration and we found it very productive. We would have no hesitation in recommending him to others.”

“Matthew gave my son 6 tutorials which were worth every penny spent. Daniel is studying Physics IB at the Higher level and was feeling very unsure about some of the Physics topics as he neared the end of the summer holidays. After one two hour session with Matthew Dan went from being nervous about returning to school to being much more chatty and relaxed with the family. Matthew put him at ease immediately, and was teaching him from the start. After four sessions Dan was starting to help some of his friends who had compulsory resits at the start of term, and after six was quite keen to get back to school, having told me earlier in the holidays the he was thinking that he might not go back to school for his final year . There is no doubt that the IB is a difficult path to follow, and you would think that a good school would provide sufficient teaching, but sometimes kids need one-on-one tutoring to help them, and I would not hesitate in using Matthew again for Dan should the need arise, nor recommending him to anyone else who needed a first class tutor. Thank you Matthew. You are a star!”
