الأسئلة الشائعة

Many leading independent and grammar schools use the 11 plus (11+) exam to assess candidates for entry into Year 7. They can also be used as a Pre-Test to give conditional offers to students ahead of entry in Year 9.

The exam can vary from school-to-school and so there is a lot of value in being assigned to a tutor who has experience with the schools you’re considering for your child. The exam tends to include papers that cover Maths and English, as well as Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning too.

Typically, the exams are taken by students in Year 6, but this can vary from one school to the next.

Finding the right school for your child can be a daunting and stressful process, and so, we want to make it as stress-free a process as possible. Our specialist consultants [link to consultants page] have decades of experience advising parents on schools and taking you through every step of the process.

Alongside this, we have put together a table of schools [link to table] that offer the 11 plus (11+) exam, their deadlines and useful information.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and we would strongly encourage parents to do their own research in addition to what we have provided.

The Independent Schools Examination Board (ISEB) Pre-Test is used by a number of independent schools to determine a child’s current learning level, as well as their academic potential. The list of schools that use the Pre-Tests can be found by clicking here, but it includes schools such as Eton College, Hampton School, Harrodian Senior School and Harrow School.
It is used to assess children before the 13+ entrance exams and, in some cases, as a pre-test to 11+ entry too.

The tests are completed online, usually at the child’s current school, but sometimes at the senior school they are applying to. The exam is made up of multiple-choice tests in English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

The tests take just under 2.5 hours (143 minutes in total) to complete, and is broken down as follows:

  • English [25 minutes]
  • Mathematics [50 minutes]
  • Verbal Reasoning [36 minutes]
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning [32 minutes]

The tests can be taken together or separately (but each segment must be completed in one sitting once started).

The tests are adaptive, which means that correct answers unlock progressively more complex questions.

For children who are applying to multiple schools which use the ISEB Pre-Tests, they will only take the tests once per academic year and their results are shared with all the schools they have applied to who use the test.

Many leading independent schools use the 13 plus (13+) exam to assess candidates for entry into Year 9. The exams are typically one hour in length with all students sitting papers in English, Mathematics and Science. Many schools may also require students to additional papers in subjects such as:

  • French
  • Spanish
  • Latin
  • History
  • Geography
  • Religious Studies
  • Mandarin Chinese

Common Entrance 13+ exams are set by the Independent Schools Examination Board (ISEB), but some schools set their own papers, so it is important to check with them in advance.

Our experienced consultants can help guide you through the maze of the application process and better understand which school is right for your child.

Alongside this, we have put together a table of some of the schools [link to table] that offer the 13 plus (13+) exam, their deadlines and useful information.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and we would strongly encourage parents to do their own research in addition to what we have provided.

Our 13+ tutors have a proven track-record of helping students secure places at some of the most competitive independent schools in the UK. They micromanage every minute detail of their student’s preparation and tailor their approach to factor in which schools you’re applying to, the strengths and weaknesses of each child and to help make the whole process an enjoyable and enriching experience.

Given the multi-layered nature of the 13+ exam, we often assign you a specialist tutor per subject to help guide your child through every facet of that paper.

We have a number of experienced tutors who travel to your home to conduct lessons in-person, as well as outstanding online tutors too.
