The Pupil Premium grant is a Government initiative that can be used by schools in any way they see fit, as long as the approach chosen is proven to help children improve their performance

The premium is determined by need rather than ability. The amount given to the schools is determined by the number of students who qualify for the scheme.

In general, children who qualify are those who are also eligible for free school meals or who have previously been in care.

It is also available to children whose parents are members of the armed forces through the Service Pupil Premium.
