International Baccalaureate (IB)

The IB Diploma Programme is made up of examinations in six subjects, three at higher level and three at standard level. Students must choose their subjects by selecting one subject per subject group. The subject groups are:

• Studies in Language and Literature
• Language Acquisition
• Individuals and Societies
• Sciences
• Mathematics
• The Arts

In addition, students are assessed in three core areas:

• Theory of Knowledge (TOK): students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
• Extended Essay (EE): an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
• Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): students participate in social, athletic or creative activities

IB subjects are graded on a scale from 7 to 1. A total of 3 additional points may be awarded to students for Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essays and extended essay (EE) components, contributing to the overall grade.

Students must successfully obtain a minimum of 24 points to pass. The maximum points that can be achieved are 45 points, with 42 points generated across their six 6 subjects and 3 bonus points derived from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.

UCAS have developed a tariff system that gives greater currency to the IB scores over A-Levels. For example, an IB score of 38/45 equates to five A grades at A-Level standard.

However, we do not believe in a generalist approach and will only match you with a tutor who specialises in that subject, whether at the standard or higher level. Most of our IB clients are thus assigned several different tutors, each with a specific specialism. Still, the entire programme is overseen and managed by our team to ensure that your child is on track to achieve top grades in all of their subject areas, as well as the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.
