BACKGROUND

Michael is an experienced Economics teacher and former Head of Economics at Winchester College. He holds an MSc in Behavioural & Economic Science from the University of Warwick, awarded with Distinction, and a First Class MA in Economics from the University of Aberdeen.

His academic background is complemented by experience examining for both AQA and Edexcel,  giving him a strong understanding of how high-level responses are assessed: not simply what pupils need to know, but how to select, apply and communicate that knowledge under examination conditions.

Outside the classroom, Michael is a keen traveller and is rarely content to stay close to home during the holidays. His travels have taken him across the United States, Russia, China, India, Japan, Cuba and Saudi Arabia. Closer to home, weekends are often spent running, cooking, listening to podcasts and new music, or exploring old English villages and cathedral towns with friends. Indian and Chinese cooking are particular favourites.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND APPROACH

Michael has taught Economics and Business in some of the UK’s most academically demanding schools, including Winchester College, Rugby School, Pate’s Grammar School and the London Academy of Excellence. He is currently Head of Faculty at St Mary’s School Ascot, where he teaches A-Level Economics and Politics.

As Head of Economics at Winchester College, Michael led a department that achieved consistently exceptional outcomes, including one of the strongest Value Added records across the school. Departments he has led have achieved either the highest or second-highest Value Added in the Sixth Form each year. His pupils have secured outstanding A-Level results, regularly exceeding both national and school averages.

His teaching is rigorous, purposeful and responsive to the individual. Michael begins by establishing where a pupil is secure, where their understanding is incomplete, and what is holding them back from producing their best work. From there, sessions may focus on difficult economic concepts, essay planning, data-response technique, evaluation, or the precise demands of a particular examination board.

As an AQA and Edexcel examiner, Michael brings valuable insight into mark schemes and the distinctions between a competent answer and one that reaches the highest levels. He helps pupils develop the judgement to interpret questions accurately, build convincing arguments and write with clarity under pressure.

Michael has considerable experience working with pupils with dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD and ASD. He adapts his approach carefully, without lowering expectations, and has supported colleagues in developing effective classroom strategies for pupils with additional learning needs.

Alongside subject tuition, Michael has extensive experience guiding applications for Economics and related degrees. He has prepared pupils for Oxford and Cambridge applications, admissions assessments including the TSA and TARA, personal statements and interviews. His approach is tailored to the pupil: exploring ideas beyond the syllabus, discussing reading, sharpening written work and developing the confidence to think aloud in an interview. Pupils he has supported have received offers from Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Chicago, Stanford and Yale.

Michael has tutored online throughout his teaching career. His sessions are structured, but never formulaic. A pupil may arrive with an essay to refine, a topic they have found difficult in school, an upcoming assessment, or a larger ambition such as an Oxford application. Between sessions, Michael sets focused work designed to address the areas that will make the greatest difference, then uses the next lesson to review progress and move the pupil forward.

WHY TUTORING?

I am motivated by fostering a genuine love of Economics in each pupil, motivating them to invest their time in the subject, and seeing this translate into high attainment.

Favourite books include Franny and Zooey by J. D. Salinger, Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre and The Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk.
