BACKGROUND

Finlay holds a BSc in Physics from Imperial College, London, having achieved A’s across the board in his GCSEs and A-Levels.

In his spare time Finlay likes to forage and play multiple musical instruments as well as being  an ultra-endurance athlete who has walked the length of New Zealand, Ireland and Wales. He is currently spearfishing from a cabin in Cornwall.

TUTORING EXPERIENCE AND APPROACH

Finlay has 5 years’ experience tutoring a wide range of students, including SEN pupils,  with a fantastic record of helping them to achieve their grades and goals and smash their expectations. His most recent student increased his Maths score from 60% to 85% and his Physics score from 65% to 80%, with 7.5 hours of lessons.

Finlay offers a calm persona alongside an injection of energy and fun to build a one-to-one rapport and foster engagement, enthusiasm and confidence. He tailors his approach to individuals, identifying where marks are being dropped, addressing common exam mistakes and employing repetition and past paper practice.

He has supported students in endeavours varying from Physics Olympiads, Python coding, and applications to Oxford University, and all leave with motivation and self-management skills alongside grades they thought unachievable before starting tutoring.

WHY TUTORING

I genuinely enjoy figuring out how to get someone to successfully answer exam questions. It’s problem solving and people skills at the same time and I love it!  Mentoring people in their approach to problems is truly rewarding because it spills over into other subjects and life aspects. It’s something I love which I’m very good at.

My favourite books are The Teachings of Don Juan by Carlos Castaneda and The Accidental Adventurer by Ben Fogle.

TESTIMONIALS

“I got the A*!!! Thank you so much Finlay! I really appreciate this, I worked so hard for it. Thank you so much.”

“Finn connected really well with my children and was able to explain maths to them in a way they understood and even enjoyed.”

“Finlay is an excellent physics tutor! My son, who started with little enthusiasm, really enjoyed the lessons and gained confidence. Highly recommend!”

“My son Marlo, who was living with me in Australia during the last European summer break, started a new school in Alicante, Spain (equivalent to Year 10 in Aus) Aug-Sept 2024. Their curriculum included compulsory Physics and Chemistry, which were new to him. Marlo, who has ADHD, struggled with Maths in Germany and wasn’t very engaged with school. His grades reflected that, and I couldn’t get him interested in dry science subjects.

We found Finlay, a UK national living locally, to tutor Marlo. From the first lesson, they hit it off. Finlay focused on Physics initially, and Marlo loved his teaching style, which helped him understand the foundations, to build on. May-June 2025 when Marlo 16yo, was struggling, his final exams looming, Finlay stepped in again, providing about 10 Maths and Physics lessons via WhatsApp. The results 80% in Physics and 85% in Maths were quite a turning point, instilling confidence in Marlo’s ability, especially after bombing Maths previously.

Finlay’s teaching style, knowledge, and rapport with teens made all the difference. He’s professional, easy to work with, and clearly loves teaching. I 100% recommend Finlay and wish him the best in his career.”
