James
Senior Tutor
BACKGROUND
An Economics specialist and former Head of Year with almost 10 years experience, James holds a degree in Economics from Nottingham University and studied IB at international French school of Sydney.
Outside of tutoring James is involved in many sports, such as football, cricket and tennis, and is also a keen reader.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND APPROACH
James has tutored students across a huge range of topics from economics to university applications and essay competitions and is dedicated to providing 1-1 support to students outside of the classroom.
A kind and very patient tutor, James fosters positive relationships with students and creates an engaging learning environment – he will always tailor sessions to the student’s individual needs and believes in incorporating current affairs and exam-style questions into lessons. James structures topics in a logical sequence and provides explanations that enable students to grasp the complexities of Economics with confidence and ease.
WHY TUTORING?
I tutor because I believe that not everyone can receive the support they need during school time. Everyone deserves the opportunity to be supported and do the very best they can in their subject. For some people, that does not always take place in school but rather outside of it in a tutoring setting.
My favourite books are: Fiction – Fatherland by Robert Harris and Non-fiction – The Journey of Humanity by Oded Galor
TESTIMONIALS
“James is an exceptional teacher with outstanding subject knowledge in economics. He can expertly teach all aspects of the A level curriculum and has experience with multiple exam boards. James is extremely dilligent and always goes above and beyond what’s expected to support his students. James is very organised and always meets deadlines. He has an excellent understanding of pastoral issues and is able to support students with a wide range of needs and abilities. James was a member of my faculty at one of the UK’s leading state sixth forms. He provided an invaluable role in ensuring that 1 in every 6 of our students received offers from Oxbridge.”
“I was taught A-Level Economics by James over a two year period at a Sixth-Form. James is very passionate about his subject, which translates in every lesson he delivers. They always include an element of real-world application, which helps contextualise economic theories through seeing how it actually manifests. This makes lessons more enjoyable, but also, in my opinion, really helps with understanding and remembering the core economics behind it. I also know that James puts a lot of thought into how best to adapt his teaching style for the needs of the student. His experience in teaching became evident whenever I struggled to understand an economic theory. He has a great skill of explaining fundamentals and only moving on from them when he’s confident his students understand.”
