BACKGROUND

A skilled and engaging tutor with hundreds of hours of classroom experience, Zachary holds a PhD from the University of Oxford in English Language and Literature.

At Oxford he won four highly-competitive scholarships for his studies, including a prestigious AHRC fully-funded doctoral fellowship and a Pembroke College Senior Studentship.

Outside of tutoring, Zachary is a freelance writer and published author. His work has appeared in international academic journals, UK national newspapers and independent magazines. His literary anthologies are published by one of the world’s largest publishing houses, Pan Macmillan, and have been sold across the globe. A fluent French speaker, he is also a published translator with a passion for European literature.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND APPROACH

Whilst at Oxford, Zachary tutored undergraduate and masters students, provided mentorship in study skills and research methods, convened one of Oxford’s principal literature seminars, and supported successful student applications for degrees at Oxford, Cambridge, and Yale. He has also taught extensively in language schools, at high schools in the UK and Hong Kong, and to private clients.

Using both innovative and proven teaching strategies, Zachary encourages his students towards a genuine love of learning while, at the same time, nurturing them towards exam success.

Zachary places a premium on debate and discussion. He aims to keep students active, involved, and motivated. But he always keeps an eye on the exam, focusing from the get-go on techniques and strategies for exam success.

Zachary has routinely achieved significant improvements in his students’ grades. But his ultimate goal is to empower students towards self-confidence and independent thought. Working closely with tutees to identify their strengths and weakness, he personalises each of his courses to provide the highest levels of support, helping his students to excel.

WHY TUTORING?

Tutoring is something that I have done since high school, and I remember the teachers who inspired me and sparked my enthusiasm for learning. I believe there are few things more rewarding than transmitting that simple joy, and motivating someone to aim for the very highest results.

My favourite books are Don Quixote – it’s much funnier than you think – and À la recherche du temps perdu (ditto).
