University Admissions: What to Do if You Missed the UCAS Deadline

A college student with a backpack exits a campus building through glass doors.

If you’ve missed the 29 January 2025 UCAS deadline for most undergraduate courses in the UK, don’t panic — there are still plenty of options available. Whether you’ve had a last-minute change of heart or simply missed the date, this guide breaks down what you can do next, including how to apply via UCAS Extra and Clearing.

First: Understand the Deadlines

The main UCAS application deadline for 2025 entry was 29 January 2025. This covers the vast majority of courses and universities. Missing it doesn’t automatically mean you’ve missed your chance — but it does mean your application won’t get equal consideration for competitive courses.

Here’s what happens next:

  • UCAS Extra opens: 26 February 2025
  • Clearing opens: 5 July 2025
  • A-Level Results Day: 14 August 2025 (when most Clearing activity happens)

Option 1: Use UCAS Extra

UCAS Extra is a great way to apply to more universities if you’ve used all five of your original choices and don’t hold any offers.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Log in to your UCAS Hub from 26 February.
  2. If eligible, you’ll see the “Add an Extra choice” option.
  3. You can only apply to one course at a time — no personal statement changes unless the university contacts you.
  4. If unsuccessful, you can add another Extra choice until 4 July.

Top tip: Research available courses thoroughly. Many well-ranked universities still have availability — especially for less oversubscribed subjects.

Option 2: Clearing

Clearing is your safety net if you didn’t apply at all, haven’t received offers, or didn’t meet your offer conditions on Results Day.

Clearing 2025 Timeline:

  • 5 July: Clearing opens
  • 14 August: Results Day — peak Clearing activity begins
  • 21 October: Final deadline to apply

How to apply through Clearing:

  1. Search for available courses on the UCAS Clearing tool.
  2. Contact universities directly to confirm interest and availability.
  3. Once you receive a verbal offer, add the course in UCAS Hub under “Add Clearing choice.”

Universities often interview or request updated personal statements — be ready with a clear explanation of why you’re interested in the course.

Option 3: Apply Directly or Take a Gap Year

Some universities and colleges accept direct applications outside of UCAS. This is more common with foundation degrees, creative arts courses, or private providers. Always contact the university first before applying.

Alternatively, consider a gap year to build your personal statement, gain relevant experience, or travel. You can then apply for 2026 entry with a stronger application and more clarity about your goals.

What If You Didn’t Get the Grades?

If your A-Level results are lower than expected, speak to an admissions tutor before making decisions. Many universities are flexible, especially if other aspects of your application are strong.

You may also consider:

  • Appealing grades (if you believe they are inaccurate)
  • Retaking A-Levels and reapplying next year
  • Choosing a different course or university through Clearing
